Beaulieu Vineyard in the town of Rutherford was the first cult wine producer in the Napa Valley. Founded in 1900 by Georges de Latour, it continues to produce some of the leading examples of California Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1980 vintage in Napa produced some inconsistent weather, though increasingly high temperatures towards harvest produced some hefty, powerful wines, some of which remain worth seeking out. The appellations of Rutherford and St Helena performed particularly well.
