Cupano Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is a full-bodied red wine produced from Sangiovese grapes in the Montalcino sub-region of Tuscany. The Cupano winery was founded in 1996 by Lionel Cousin and his wife Ornella. Lionel is a former cinematographer who turned to winemaking after spending time in the Sahara Desert. He is a disciple of the father of modern Burgundy, Henri Jayer, and his wines reflect his commitment to natural winemaking. Their Brunello di Montalcino is made from hand-harvested Sangiovese grapes that are fermented in small, temperature-controlled tanks. The wine is then aged for at least 2 years in oak barrels, and then for an additional 6 months in bottle before release. "The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is a bit coy, having just been bottled two weeks ago. Mentholated herbs, exotic spices, dark red fruits, dusty roses and crushed stone can all be found. It`s silky, nearly creamy in feel, with cooling acidity to balance as notes of black cherry, plums and balsam herbs swirl throughout. This leaves a coating of fine tannins to linger along with a bitter tinge of savoury spice while maintaining a lovely freshness through the long and pleasantly chewy finale." Vinous, 2023
